Here is a set of 15 old lace spindles used by lace-makers in the Haute-Loire region of France. They still have their original thread.
Unlike embroidery or other techniques, the manufacture of lace requires a specific material such as wooden spindles. They can be made in many woods. They can be made of pear, pine, rosewood, beech, etc.
In the past, the lacemakers "made couvige" in the villages of Haute-Loire. They gathered outside a barn in the summer and inside in the winter, and made lace by singing, talking, or praying.
Most of the time the lace tile was made on the farm. Each lacemaker personalized it by adding precious images like those of the Virgin, the Saints or Saint Francis Regis.
Even today, enthusiasts make lace and use these small spindles that one hears clicking during the work ...
